Hello, I was wondering when to change the fuel filter I am on 120k mls now.

How to change it? Does the gastank needs to be less than 1/4 full?

Not many replace it, never heard of any get clogged up. But its always a good idea to replace it, having less or more fuel wont matter but if it was lower it would be less fuel spillage when you remove the fuel pump assembly from the tank.

You more likely will get spillage no matter what when removing the pump, because it is always submerged in fuel and the internals are filled. You can remove the fuse for the fuel pump and crank the engine over a few times to relieve the pressure in the fuel lines, that way you dont squirt fuel all over your seats. When you undo the electrical plug, fuel lines, and then the top collar. Have a cook pan/plastic container and towels handy near by, slowly lift the pump and this will allow the majority of the fuel to drain off. Put a rag under it and lay it in the pan. Ive never done this on the GS but I have other cars and its pretty much straight forward.

Next locate the filter that on the bottom of the fuel pump and examine how to remove it. Some simply pop off, some unscrew but it shouldn't be difficult to figure it out.

Actually I found a video that may help you its for an IS but they should be pretty much identical

Pretty easy job except to swap a lot of parts over. I bought a new lid, lid gasket, prefilter and fuel pump/filter gaskets aswell.

I went 4mpg less after fuel filter 31.3mpg > 36mpg.

Some pictures:

Nice one, good photo record. Are you saying you are using less gas since the fuel filter change?

Ordered a fuel filter from my local Lexus dealer for my 2008 GS460..

But when I remove the actual unit, this was all I saw. Did they mess up? I'm not getting it

This was the only filter I saw on the bottom of the fuel pump. and it didn't match what they gave me

23217-31100 seems to be for GS300/350/430 and 450h only. I think the GS460 uses a different filter that is integrated with the pump, and the GS450h has a completely different float and upper assembly. The 460 and the 450h seem to have slightly different parts compared to the rest of the 3GS range.

My local dealer has lots of stuff for the GS300/350, but there are some unique part numbers for the 450h, I did a lot of research on this and just ordered the full pump assembly for my GS450h, will share when the parts arrive

Got down to doing this... takes 20mins max. Fuel will spill out so just get lots of rags handy.

This is what it looks like after 11 years, 174,000km... For RHD, the pump is located in the rear passenger side

New Pump

Installed... note that on the GS450h instead of a white plastic ring, I have a steel compression ring bracket held down by 8 screws...

Extracted old filter... it was completely clogged, and when I tried to drain it, the stuff that came out looked like heavy fuel oil...

Fuel sock all caked up... I don't know how the pump manages to work!!

To prevent fuel spill, unplug the electrical plug from the fuel pump lid, (but not the rubber fuel hoses). Then turn on the car and let it run a few seconds until it stalls. When you remove the hoses, will be almost no gas inside now.
