In replacing my rear license plates on my 2006 gs300, the heads of the plastic screws broke off flush, making it impossible to grip them from the outside. I'm thinking that rather than trying to drill them out and possible ruining the threads II would be safer to access them through the trunk provided they are accessible and have enough threads exposed to get a vice grip on them to remove. So my question is whether anyone has preformed a similar procedure or if this is even possible to do? Or if someone has a better idea for getting the plastic screws out, please sure your suggestion. Thanks
I'd drill them since they are plastic. They should come out easy. They'll probably spin out with the drill bit if you reverse it once you get into the screw. That's a lot easier than tearing the trunk lid apart to access them, and you still may not be able to get ahold of them from the back. Hint: next time don't use plastic screws.
Thanks for the reply. You are probably right on drilling them out. I just don't want the hassle should the threads get damaged. As to your advice about not using plastic screws, I totally agree. The previous owner evidently thought it was a good idea.
Just make sure that you use a drill bit that is much smaller dia. than the screw, drill it right in the middle and you shouldn't touch the threads. If they don't come out when you drill them, screw a larger sheet metal screw into the hole you just drilled and you should be able to get them out that way.
