Been researching this quite a bit for some time now and finally decided to get it checked out. My local mechanic is at about four hours and we haven't moved much. Here's what's up...

My check VSC/check engine light came on at some point over the last year or so. I had the dealership check the code and although I don't remember exactly what it was, it came back to the catalytic converter. They said they could certainly replace it, but if I wasn't losing MPG then I could leave it alone. I left it alone.

Shortly thereafter, my cruise control stopped working. I engage the system and the "cruise" light illuminates, but when I click to set the speed, it just doesn't respond. The "cruise" light stays on, but no cruise control.

My local mechanic said that sometimes the cruise control will stop working when the check engine light is on, so he cleared the codes and I tried driving. No codes, but still no cruise. A few miles into driving, the light came back on and we got P0500 for cruise control. Makes sense. We also got a code tying back to the SP2 sensor, so I picked up a new one and installed it. No dice. Still no cruise. We hooked up the diagnostic reader and took it for a spin, and found that the diagnostic reader wasn't registering a speed, according to the cruse control system. Other systems are fine - speedometer, engine, transmission, etc. Just cruise control.

I understand there are additional speed sensors that could be bad, but the code doesn't point to them. I also understand it could be a wiring issue or it could be the ECM. We haven't gotten that far yet.

Any other thoughts or experience with this? Thanks!!
