Hi guys,

I removed the oil filter canister on my 2008 GS350 and it came out in pieces. I am trying to figure out exactly how this goes back together. To help, mine looked like picture here, the one on the left. I had four pieces.

The can
The spring
The tube and the circular disk.

I hope I assembled them correctly but I doubt it.
The car runs, no lights on but I am a tad scared at this point.

Asistance please.

Thanks

That helps a lot, with one missing piece. Where does the spring go?

I believe it goes in the canister's hole. So the assembly is like: Canister<= disc<= spring<=tube. You may press and twist the tube to luck it in place.

thanks, I will give that a try.

Do you know if it comes out in pieces each time you change the filter? That would be a pain. I suspect the last guy to change the filter didn't really know or care!

Hey Bruce,

No, unless you disassemble it.

The next time around, you have to buy only the filter (gauze) mesh that comes with two o rings-mall and big ones.

I wonder why your filter cartridge came apart like that?!

i can't be certain until i remove it when i change the oil again...but I thought the spring is in first, then the disc, then the tube. It's never come apart on me and I've changed oil in this car 4 or 5 times. I can feel that the tube is under the tension of the spring, as I can push down on the tube and feel the spring compress. But..it's never come apart. I think you push down, compressing the spring and then turn the tube to "unlock" the parts. Putting it back together should not be that difficult.

The first time I've changed my filter, I thought about undoing it but got lazy. Either way, Bruce, just try to play with it. Not really that hard, I think, there's only 3-4 pcs to shuffle

Will do. Yeah, the last oil change was done at a GM dealership and my guess is they mucked it up and just jammed it back in place.

Thanks, guys.

I finally figure this out. Took it back out and assembled it correctly. Terrible design, no doubt. Why they didn't stick with a spin on is a puzzle to me.

to save on materials, better for the cost and for the environment, just thank yourself lucky that you dont have a landcruiser v8, their filter cover is the same design but made from poxy plastic lol.

It breaks if the idiot who did the last oil change did it up too tight. and with a 25nm torque rating its easy for idiots to stuff up lol.
