Default Secondary induction filter

Alright guys and gals forgive me if this is already on here somewhere but I can't find it. I am going through my newly purchased 2006 GS300 AWD. I have done spark plugs and all that BS. I was putting the air filter lid back on and noticed that there is a secondary filter that doesn't easily come out. I was wondering if it should be discarded or not. I am wanting to maximize the MPG out of this car and didn't know if it would be beneficial to keep it in place or just cut it out and go on. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Are you just talking about the wire screen... that is only there to catch anything gross that happens to get by the air filter... like stopping a cricket from flying into your 4th cylinder when you .. uh forgot to put an air filter in?

It does have some form of media in it. Just curious if I should remove it or get a new one the car is 8 years old with 95K on it. I'm sure it doesn't flow like it used to.

That's just a charcoal filter to absorb fumes after running. The Mustang guys remove it to gain some airflow, same theory applies here. Add a couple holes to the bottom of the air box for more flow too.
