Default Swapping 4th Gen to 5th Gen nav units

Has anybody EVER swapped a 4th Generation nav unit with ML upgrade for a 5th generation nav unit. I am really interested to know if this is possible as I am dying to have the OEM integration with my PHone. Is this an impossible task?????????????

Thanks a billion

i did it over a year ago works flawless but youll find this forum in general is full of people who cant even change a tire, let alone pull out almost 5k in navigation parts and buy 5k in parts and then attempt to rewire and re install back into there car. i still have the only US gti vr6 with Climatronic almost 12 years later and ill probably be the only GS owner with 5 gen swap. so yes it is possible and good luck with the swap

I'd love to see the writeup on this.

I retrofitted Navi into my BMW 740iL, from the looks of how a Lexus is wired it ought to be a much easier swap than the BMW (I had to change telematics/navi/stereo harness that runs from the trunk to the dash).

Where did you get the gen 5 nav unit?? I know some pretty tech/auto savvy people who may be able to pull this feat off? Also, could you link me up to ur thread, I did a search and you have a ton of posts. Thank you!!!!!!

Shot, that looks easy. Granted I originally did a virgin retrofit on my 740, upgrading the screen and nav computer later on we're very simple.

the older bmw audi or vw's have just wires to connect no CAN lines or HD video plugs so i would say doing a virgin install on a earlier vehicle is a walk in the park.

You have to swap a harness, that's about 4" thick, from the dashboard, under the carpets, to the trunk. You have to splice all the speaker wires at the base of the drivers B pillar, remove rear seat, front seat, lower dash, center console, carpet, etc.

It's a lot of actual work. If you have done it before and know what you're doing expect to spend at least 6-7 hours on it on an E38 or an E39. The non-nav cars have their radio in the dash, nav cars have itin the trunk, bracket in dash needs changed. Lots and lots of splicing, etc.

i did motor swaps for years in VW which required entire harness swaps and alot of integration of systems, your swapping in and some splicing would have been a dream job for me lol

Ben, do you know if a navigation unit can be put into a non-navigation 2007 GS and work properly, controls and all?
