225 50 17 came from the factory on the 3gs' with 17 inch wheels. yes, it will seem a little stretched on the 8" wheel but it still works out fine. with a 225 wide tire, you they say a fitting between a 7.5" wheel to an 8.5" wheel will fit with no issues, and not be stretched.

 

I guess I will buy either 235 45 17 or 225 50 17 depending on the price and availability. I am looking to buy used winter/all season tires. I guess either of them won't have much problem.
