I had this problem before and in my situation it was the bulbs. Plus i rather switch out the bulbs first then the ballast.

Hey Folks - I'm having the same problem and i'm so glad i read these posts. I purchased the original bulb from lexus to replace myself. Can anyone provide me with an link to instructions on how to replace theses bulb? I heard that you have to take the front bumper off to do this. Is there an easy step by step process? Thanks

you definitely do not need to remove the bumper at all.

take the plastic panels off in the engine bay. get an 11mm socket wrench to unbolt the washer fluid spout to make reaching the driver's side bulb easier. you'll see a clear, circular cover with a star shaped design on it. twist that and it'll expose the plug for the bulb. turn the plug and then the bulb is exposed. there will be a metal clip that you squeeze and swing out of the way. then you can pull the bulb out.

What gridlock said...it actually takes about 30 minutes to do both of them. Just be very careful with the light bulb.

Wait til you see all the neat racing stuff when you go into the shop. Really cool place to hang out in Torrance. Robbie will give a once over for you. Call them Monday afternoon cause racing season started to day and they were all out at the track up north running the new car. Let me know what happens, and don't forget to tell them "Doc"*sent you.*They will take care of you and won't break the bank..

Did it just return to stock function, or did the improved ground give you any better lighting? IMO, the HID lighting on our cars is not what I'd have expected. Really the only factory disappointment for me from an otherwise well designed car. That, and the issues with lowering AWDs.

If anyone been through or know the solution, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you
The way to be 100% sure on whether its the bulb or ballast, move the flickering bulb to the other side and see if it does the same thing. You didn't give the make and model so I can't see what size but it will either be a D1 or D2. It will probably cost around $200-$400 to replace if it's a ballast. About $75 - $150 if it's a bulb needing replaced. I would go with the dealership if it's a ballast issue. I would go with an aftermarket HID company if it's a bulb issue.

An aftermarket HID company will sell you a pair of bulbs for around $90 where as the dealership will sell you one for that price. The ballast is a different issue and wired to your car which is why I say go to the dealership to replace that part.

I absolutely refuse to pay Lexus a grand per headlight to replace ballast, etc. Finally I woke up and remembered my Bud Chris Rado has his own shop in Torrance Ca. called World Racing where he builds his world class Scions under Toyotas sponsorship.

Anyway these guys build their own stuff and think outside of the box. So, I went over and talked to Rob Cardona who is the general manager and a really cool guy. After explaining the symptoms, he suggested it might be a combination of things, so they tore the front end off of my Lexus, examined it and told me first of all the bulbs weren't right, and they noticed the grounding of the headlight assembly was poorly designed, and all the symptoms fit an intermittent badly grounded system too. So they ordered all the right factory bulbs and inexpensive after market ballasts, and reworked the grounding, and installed.

My lights come with a snap, they are bright clear, and no more flicker. If you're in Southern California I'd go by and see them. If not give them a call and mention that "DOC" posted it on the Lexus Forum. Those guys are all young, into racing and Motorsports, and very cool and will talk to you if nothing else.

I have never been happier and they solved the problem. Someone suggested that Lexus wants to sell you the whole thing so they don't have to admit they had a poor ground design among other things. Or as Robbie said, "I bet if you go to Lexus and have them do it, if you tear it down afterwards you'll find they "fixed" the ground defect, but they won't tell you that." Had lunch with Robbie today. Give him a call, tell him "Doc" told you. My lights are kicking *** now.

Hope this helps

Hey I have a followup to the headlight issue. It seems Rob was right. Recently I got some water in the headlight assembly, and Robbie decided to replace my assembly. When the new one came it, the ground was different than the original. It seems after market bulbs don't work as well consistently, with a poorly designed ground. So factory bulbs seem in order, and or fixing the ground. AT any rate call Robbie and the guys over at World Racing, and talk to them about it. They'll get you right and save you some bucks. Everyone else told me it was the ballast. It wasn't.

Well to be sure Rob ordered factory bulbs, AND fixed the ground and my lighting improved immediately. Brighter, sharper, and not one flicker since. Seriously happy with what they did. All they charged me for was the bulbs. No labor, or for fixing the bad grounds that seem to be part of the design.
