I have been pondering for a while if I should upgrade my intake. The biggest question I have right now is would the black piece of plasic have to stay off or does it just go over the new intake? I don't want to have the take the black covers off the sides of the engine.

You Do not need to take the black covers off the sides of the engine. You just need to take it off for the installation and put it back.
