I know this is an old thread, but I didn't want to create a new one for my issue.

I just got an '07 GS 350 and my cluster and nav brightness doesn't change at night to a dimmer setting automatically. If I change the setting y'all are talking about in any way, it automatically changes to night mode (at night, how it should be). Should my cluster lights and nav brightness auto change to a dimmer setting at night?

Not sure on this model, but you're describing what happens on a couple of my Lexus when you have the brightness turned all the way up to 'max'. There is a little click indent when you do that and it stays on full bright. Try turning it just off that indent.

Hmm. Mine looks like this. I'm not sure about an indent.

Make sure the one with the gauge symbol isn't in manual mode or on max. It doesn't dim just because you have the lights on. The navi screen dims to night mode based on the amout of light hitting the light sensor on the dashboard. Check your setting on the navi system as well.

It's set to auto - normal. I'll check the nav now.

Edit: Yeah, I check through nav settings and they are really limited. Nothing about brightness.

An example, if it helps, was last night it was 9:30 or so (dark out) and my cluster and nav screen were still as bright as they were at 12:00 pm.

Wait until night, where the lights are activated, then go to that drop down panel and click the down arrow a few times. Then, check the DISP button on your nav, make sure "Day Mode" isn't selected.

So I opened the panel and clicked the down button which turned the cluster down to a good lighting for night. With the nav, there really no settings for a 'Day Mode' or anything like that.

In your last picture, when hitting the display button, there will be a button that is probably selected that says day mode BUT it will only show you that button if the ambient light sensor says it is dark outside (you can wait until night time, or cover the light sensor on the dash, its the dome in the middle by the windshield glass) and the headlights are on.

So to be clear, the button we are looking for only appears when all conditions are met. If you attempt this with sunlight or anything else telling the car its bright out, we won't get the option to turn it off.

Hope this helps, I am doing this all from memory as I haven't had my 3GS for about 2 years now but I still think this should work.

Thanks for your help and patience Joe. I will give this a shot at lunch today and report back.

Edit: IT WORKED! I covered the sensor and then selected 'Disp' while on the nav screen and the 'Day Mode' option was there and selected. So I deselected it and checked to see if that worked. When I don't touch the sensor, it displays daytime expected light output (cluster and nav screen). When I cover the light sensor, the cluster and screen both darken and the nav turns to a black background. Thank you Joe!!
