So i just started to notice this and im pretty sure this isnt normal since i never had this happen on any other car. First i notice when i start my car after its been sitting for a bit, its idles kind of funny. This morning it would bounce from 1200 to 1600 rpms. i know thats not really a big deal. Second while i was driving and the car was warming up, i noticed when i took my foot off the gas, the rpms dropped down to around 800 then shot back up to around 1800-2000. After driving for 10 mins or so, it went away. Now i noticed my car always sounded loud when starting up which was odd to me.
Should there be a certain period of time i should allow the car to warm up before leaving? I typically get in the car and sit in the car for 2-3 mins to let all the fluids start moving around again. I have to take my car to the dealer this weekend anyway since my mirrors arent tilting down in reverse anymore. Figure I might as well ask them about this too.
Yes, this is normal. Particularly in cold weather. Do you keep your car in a garage or outside? This is my first Lexus, but I've owned 3 Toyotas before this car and they all did the same thing. I called my local dealership just to make sure, and they confirmed that the engine is warming up when it's doing that. I kind of find it annoying, but it is what it is. Mine usually idles right at 1000 while at a stop light...normal RPMs are between 6 and 700. I have to hold the brakes harder...likes to jump when it's idling that high.
depends. if im at my place, its parked outside. if im at my girls house, its in the garage. i know automatic cars ideal around 1000-1200 and manuals are around 600 to 800. i just find it odd how they jump when you start the car, almost like its revving going from 1200 to 1600 and how when i let off the gas its drops consideribly before going back to normal.

I dont think it is normal. Go to dealer or better yet, make a video before going there. Mine starts at 1500 after ~5-10 sec it drops to ~1200. When put into drive it drops to 700, but that depends on the outside T. When it is cold it stays around 1000rmp even in drive position. When T gauge reaches ~4.5 points which is somewhere close to the middle, then it it goes down to ~700rpm even if you put it in neutral. Hope this helps.
Today morning in Philly it was 27 degrees and I let the car sit for a minute before driving. I noticed that the cars RPMs stayed at like 1500 for a few minutes then dropped to 1100-1200. The car was jumpy and as soon as I take my foot off the brake it starts moving, something I was used to with my Maxima which did that all the time. After I got about a mile I noticed it go down a bit more but not to normal idle and I also notice that the tranny would downshift when I start braking for a light or when I am going down hill. As soon as the temp guage passed like 35-40% it was normal and there was no more downshifting. I'm planning on mentioning it to my Service Tech when I take the car in for a door rattle, the brake TSIB, and the TSIB for the car pulling to one side.

In your case it seems to be ok. It takes about 5min of normal driving to get to needed engine temp when it is cold.
