Default Nav disc upgrade from 06 to current?

So I have a 08 gs loaner and noticed the graphics on the maps seem much better, if I upgrade discs would I get the new graphics and layout graphics for the audio and climate and all the other screens? I know I would loose my audio menu bypass functionality, but would I also loose being able to watch movies while on motion web though my cables are still cut to enable this?

TIA

If you upgrade, you will not get any better graphics, that is a different generation system. Update gets you new maps, and some differences in guidance. You will lose the ability to do the bypass dance as well.

think of it this way, the graphics are driven by the hardware and that doesn't change. you need to buy a new car

Correct, what you have is the Gen4 navigation system in your 06 GS300. 2007 and newer GS' enjoy the smooth graphics of the Gen5 system like this...

Here are some screen shots of the 5th Gen Nav that first started with the 2006 IS250/350. This is quoted from an old thread:

As DaveGS4 mentioned in those two links, the same procedure works for the Gen 5 systems found in the New 2006 IS, Newest 2007 models i.e. The ES350, RX350, GS Series, and the LS460. This same nav interface is also found in the new 2007 Camry w/Nav. The New 2006 IS was the first Lexus model to feature the 5th Gen Nav. It will eventually be available across the board along with select Toyota models.

It's not a matter of just swapping discs. It's the whole center dash console and nav system you would need to change out.

pretty expensive lol. im sure well over 2k and at that point why not just rip your old one out and spend 1k on a nice aftermarket nav/dvd player

2k is an understatement, if 2 side mirrors cost almost 1500, i am sure the nav will be upward to 5k+ for replacement

I asked my buddy to price it at Northpark Lexus in San Antonio. He said the entire job would be around $8000 NOT including labor. Not worth it to me.

Do you have any more information on this? I have an 06 GS430 and would be curious to know whats involved with upgrading to 5th gen. What parts and/or harnesses have to be changed? I used to do car stereo and alarm installation so I'm not afraid to do the install myself, but wouldn't know where to begin parts-wise. Thanks.

i havent heard back from him yet if you need to change the navi ecu but i would assume so. i would assume you need the navi unit, navi ecu and the wiring harness.
