Default Smart key is not smart anymore :(

When I bought the car, I really liked how I did not have to open doors for my passengers, they would just touch the door handle and the door would open. Not anymore though I don't know what I did, and personally I don't recall doing anything to it. Should I just go to a dealer and get it reprogrammed or is it something I'm doing wrong ?

for them to be able to open the door on their own with the master key in your pocket, they'll have to be really really close to you

refer to the sensitivity map in your owner's manual (damn, 4th time I've mentioned this today)

if the passenger is going into the passenger side door and you are at the driver side, i really don't think they'll be able to open it.

please elaborate a bit more on where everyone was when it used to work and compared to the most recent event when it didn't work, yours is 08, i really doubt it's the key

Maybe a battery issue with the key?

did u use something to cover your keyfob? u put ur cellphone closely with ur key?
the key transmit the signal through radio frequency.
so, remember, anything that could interfer radio frequency can reduce ur key's sensitivity.

Wow, looks like someone needs to seriously RTFM. Your last question was about the puddle lights and it's a related subject. The only person that can unlock the passenger doors by grabbing a passenger door handle is the person holding the transponder. It's a safety feature and yes, you have to be that close.

I assume you know this but I will say it anyhow. In order for the door to open it has to be touched in the right location. There is a sensor that is on the inside part of the handle. If you grab the handle by the top and bottom edge you will not make contact with the sensor, you fingers have to go inside the opening,

People, I know how the smart key work. I was just wondering, maybe someone here with more experience would know why the passenger doors don't open when handles are touched by the passengers.

There is no need to read the manual, its not a NASA Shuttle

Anyways, thanks for your responses, I will do more testing tonight.

well it was already answered. the reason it doesnt open for them when they touch it is because they dont have a remote for the car to sense it. it doesnt just unlock for anyones hand or else i wouldnt be keeping what i have in my car lol.

Well maybe it is NASA material To open all 4 doors with the door handle sensor, you need to touch the sensor in any other door beside the driver door.

Check page 23 of the owners manual.

Inside the car, ignition off
On your fob, press and hold unlock and trunk buttons
The gauge display will show which doors unlock

I changed mine, but I can't for the life of me remember how you change it - I guess that's where the manual will come in.

The curious thing would be why yours started operating differently than it had been.
