When switch from D to S while in hwy
the 350z and g35 "sports mode" automatically down shifts for you as you come to a stop, but would never shift up and bounce off the limiter as i8abmr said. leaving the auto 350z in 1st w/ tcs off lots of fun in empty parking lots 
as for slowing down, with the shifter in the 350z and g35 @ freeway speeds, it usually always stayed in the gear you choose until you changed it (i think thats how i remember it working)
