First oil change and making a DIY
Well folks, back from my long vacation and I was about to do the oil change DIY, ordered up the filter and bought the oil. I did some extensive research on the web and it seems from two independent sources that Toyota does indeed use a special break in oil. When they did the oil analysis on new engines, the Moly count was through the roof, indicating that oil has extra Moly to help with break in. If that is the case, it's best to leave the oil in the car until 5K and not change it at 1K. Can anybody else confirm this? I haven't driven the car much since I was on vacation I barely have 700 miles on it now.
^ True. Search the 2IS forum, many owners had UOAs done on their 1st oil change at 5k. Toyota as well as Honda uses dino oil from the factory with extra moly for initial break-in. You OCD types can still change your oil at 1k, the extra moly is not a deal breaker since normal engine break-in is apprx 680 miles. Lexus supposedly 'breaks in' each engine at the factory before installing, so formal break-in for the engine is not what it was like 10 yrs ago. FWIW I'm sticking with 5k OCIs and 5w-30 dino oil, but that's just me, and certainly do not want to start a holy war over oil types, weights and change intervals. . .
Old wives tale about break-in oil. I did an oil analysis on my dads ES350 with 900 miles and there was nothing out of the oridinary with Moly, Zinc or Phosphorous. Looking at the report now and Moly is 51, Zinc is 726 and Phos is 735. Only thing out of ordinary was the high amount of Calcium which was 2626. My insolubles were high which meant lots of crap in the oil so it was good that i drained it.
An update for those that do oil changes. The part number for the GS350 has changed to Part # 04152-YZZA5 from Part # 04152-YZZA3, the reason stated is the the o-rings are of a stronger material. Once the A3's are all gone, only the A5 will be sold. The A5 box contains filters stamped A3, so they kept the filter and just changed the o-ring package. I just ordered a couple of filters from a vendor on clublexus.
