On your GS300, has anyone noticed ASL doing much to raise or lower volume or adjust tone quality? I've experimented a bit with lowering the window to increase background noise and I'm not noticing much of a change in audio. Sometimes I see the bar graph changes slightly.

I notice a huge difference when the ASL is on or off. Do you have the Levinson stereo?
INHOCJP, no Mark Levinson system. Is yours ML or standard audio system? And what do you mean by "huge difference"? What does it do?
Dave, I have the ML system. By a "huge difference," the best way to describe it is that everything sounds louder and clearer. Also, bass is way more pronounced. For instance, with ASL on, I'll listen to a cd on volume level 20. With ASL off, I'll push the volume up to 28-29 to get a similar sound.
By no means am I an audiophile, but I definitely notice a difference with the ASL on...much more so than on my old '99 GS (non-nak).
I dont have a 3rd gen GS, but I had one for a few days, with the Mark Levinson system. And I noticed the same thing. Everything sounds better at ALL volumes with it on, but I definitely wasn't getting a sound-leveling effect. It just stayed the same volume.
The ASL has more of an effect on my 2nd Gen GS with ML. And I still don't understand why bass is boosted and everything is made clearer simply with the ASL on. It's like an equalizer button...but I thought it was called ASL. Strange. Sometimes, I actually don't want the ASL effect, as I want the song to remain loud even when I slow to a stop. But I can never turn it off, because the overall sound quality drops significantly.
On the ML system, looking at the audio screen, you can see the ASL bar graph which shows how much ASL effect is being applied. While driving, you can see the effect increase as volume is reduced, while the effect reduces as you slow down. So it seems tied at least to the speedometer as well as the volume control. When stopped or when playing very loud, there is no difference between ASL on and off, from what I have experienced. But yes, it makes a bigger difference as volume is lowered and speed is increased. In that case it raises the volume (so you don't have to compensate for ambient noise), and the bass is also boosted gradually as this helps keep the road noise from masking the bass. Seems to work unobtrusively well.
