If it is, then Lexus has kind of done this before. It was the first time the ES got a significant bump in power during its product refreshning. The 94/95 ES got a bump from 185hp to 188hp as they went alumiunum and lost the old iron block.
Besides peak power, I hope the gearing is aggresive and there is low torque available. And I hope it sounds good, gotta give it to Nissan, they really know how to tune that 3.5 to give it a nice stock sound in the 350Z/FX/G35.

i dont think toyota had 3.3 in camry when they debuted ES300. ES and Camry got the 3.3 V6 about the same time after the debute of RX330, i think.

The 1st gen RX300 (MCU30)from 98-03 had the 1MZ-FE 3.0L V6 for it's duration. The RX330 is the second generation RX w/the 3MZ-FE 3.3L V6 (MCU33). The ES got the 3.3L 3MZ-FE V6 at the same time the Camry SE V6 model did in 2004.
The 94 ES got a bump to 188hp because the Gen 3 92-93 Camry and Gen 2 ES VCV10 had the 3VZ-FE V6 3.0L 185hp V6 Cast Iron Block. In it's 3rd year production of the Camry/ES (94-96), Toyota switched to the at that time new 1MZ-FE V6 3.0L 188HP Aluminum Block that was the first OBDII compliant engine in the world. No Manual option was available for the duration.
So to recap:
92-96 Camry/ES:
92) 3VZ-FE - all new VCV10
93) 3VZ-FE - unchanged
94) 1MZ-FE - new engine/tranny changeover MCV10
95) 1MZ-FE w/exterior update
96) 1MZ-FE unchanged
02-06 Camry/ES
02) 1MZ-FE - all new MCV30
03) 1MZ-FE - unchanged
04) 3MZ-FE - new engine/tranny changeover MCV31 (3.3L V6 upgrade for Camry SE, ES330)
05) 3MZ-FE w/exterior update
05) 3MZ-FE unchanged
2007-2011 Camry/ES - New Chassis/New Engine (GR series)
1998-2003 RX300 - Same engine all 5 years
2004-2008 RX330 - Same engine. Per Elizabeth's notes, 2007 is when the RX350 comes out. That doesn't fall w/in the tradition unless they extend the chassis/generation 1 extra year to year number 4 for the RX.
The new GS will be getting a 3.5L V6 as the GS350 in 2nd production year (2007) as well as the GS450h. Not the regular Toyota/Lexus tradition for adding engine changeovers in that part of the year.

In the next 3 years, Lexus will be doing many firsts. And after seeing the focus, and all the hard work that went into the new IS design, as well as the new GS, I can confidently say these firsts are a good thing. Imagine Lexus sales 3 years from now
