@Mn06gs300 Why are you fixing the ECU? A problem with the ECU could cause errors with other systems, but you really won't know for sure until further diagnosis. The "Check VSC" message appears when a CEL is tripped. It does not necessarily mean there is an issue with the VSC. You need to connect a scanner to the OBDII and read the stored DTC(s). That will lead you to why you have the "Check VSC."

An O2 sensor code will throw a check VSC light. I suggest you research the O2 sensor code, clear it, and see if it comes back. Are you running premium gas and have you run any injector cleaner thru the car?
Your " not shifting into 6th gear" may be a separate problem. For a new poster of a 17 YO car, these unknown issues aren't a surprise. Address the two issues separately. You may also want to challenge the person who said your ECU problem created the "not shifting into 6th gear".
