Default Low Gas Milieage

I bought my 2007 Lexus ES 350 March 6, 2023 and my city gas mileage is between 8.8 mpg - 11 mpg

I do not have a lead foot. My 1996 Chevy Caprice that I just sold got same gas mileage and that was a 5.7 liter with a V8 engine.

My Lexus is a 6 banger! Why am I getting such low mpg? I really don't want to take it to Lexus dealer where they will soak me for $250.00 then tell me they don't know the issue!

Could it be a malfunctioning computer?

Btw this is the GS section! But this a general question.. There are so many things that can change gas mileage. Air filter, tire pressure below 37 psi, old spark plugs, dirty maf sensor, dirty fuel injectors, taking off hard on stops lights, driving the speed limit. You may also have a worn out wheel bearing, or a sticking brake caliper. Simply raising the car in the air and spinning the wheels to make sure all spin freely

1: change your air filter if it hasnt been replaced
2: Inflate tires to 37psi
3: Replace old spark plugs with original ngk or oem plugs in the part number for your car. Do not buy amazon/ebay spark plugs as there all fakes.
4: Remove the maf sensor and spray it with electrical cleaner, a good time to remove and clean the throttle body aswell
5: With low fuel in the tank pour in a good fuel injector cleaner
6: Try to slow down your take off at stop lights
7: Drive slower than usual on the highways, hold the right lane and use cruise control.

Thank you! I already checked the tire pressure. Their all within specs. Other stuff I have no idea about. Where is the MAF sensor? Are spark plugs all underneath car?

MAF sensor is on top of the airbox, and spark plugs are usually under the engine cover. But its best to take it to a mechanic to have them replace all the plugs, if you are not good at working on cars. Because if something simple as replacing plugs, can creep up new issues like broken terminal clips, with our the clips are fragile and with time there brittle.
