Ok - pulled the 5amp fuse from the driver side and the starter still runs when I reconnect the battery.

well, it's not the ignition switch.
now you need to pull the starter relay under hood

Do you just pull up on the relay to get it out? Or, is there a tab that needs to be pushed in? I don't want to break anything.

Yes, this is a bad starter. Please create a new thread about your experience with replacing the starter.
P.S. You can put the relay and fuse back in place.

jefthim, what is your car year and mileage when the starter failed?
And stay away from auto shop brand starters. They're all junk that will last a year or so at best. Trust only remanufactured OEM or DENSO.
The OEM starter is fully rebuildable.

I understand it's under the intake manifold and I'm not sure I'm up for that job.
