u'r car is black right, what color r u trying 2 do.. red or blue? i thik red would b nice on black, but carbon fiber would b hotter,
i just had a body shop take the pieces off and paint them using the same paint they use 2 paint cars reall glossy and so far no problems, no peeling,no fading....or u could use high heat engine paint from pepboys or autozone and just take the parts off , clean them them and paint them than use a clear afterwards....good luck post a pic when u r done....

Still not sure why you want to do this but I would have to believe that getting them really clean and then taking some very fine sandpaper to them first would be required to get a paint to stick. Good luck.
hey adrian, how much did it cost you for them to do that. who did you go to? i am going with red, it just looks cleaner and brighter, thanks for the info bro.

oh this is so funny i think this was my first post on CL
asking about how to paint plastic parts in engine bay
anyways..........what my body shop did was clean and sand(scuff) the parts and painted them just like regular body parts and clear coated them ........yup so far so good!!
the reason why i did it cuz it was in the body shop already getting a complete paint job so i said might as well

Old post but still very informative for the n00b (newbie) DIYers. What I did in my old VW engine cover was:
1. Sandpaper 1000-1500 grit to remove any imperfections and scratches on the surface.
2. A can of grey primer. If my memory serves me, I think the brand is Krylon and available in Ace Hardware or Home Depot. Usually a coat or two is enough.
3. A can of paint. Usually something bright red, blue, yellow or whatever. I went with the combo Mc Donald's colors of red and yellow.
4. Toothpick, Q-tip or whatever you need to remove any overspray, overfill, etc.
5. A can of clearcoat. This is where the trick lays. More clearcoat, more shine. Less clearcoat, less shine.
6. PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE. If you are painting it silver or something, it will take quite a lot of coats to cover the black of your base plastic. Don't try to overlay your paint too much because it will cause "drooling" or "melting" where the paint lays so thick that it starts to run. It will look butt-nasty and you may end up having to resand the whole surface again and respray.
7. Be creative. I added some sort of silvery sparkles available in hobby shop before I put on the clearcoat. It gives the paint a very nice silvery shiny finish and I get a lot of positive comments from them. But, a few of my friends think they are kinda gay....
Hope this helps.
