So my speedo and odo randomly both went out, i scanned it and got VSS A so i replaced it went on a drive and still both don't work, so i hooked up a scan tool and checked the live data and the sensors are working it shows me the vehicle speed but speedo and odo still don't work, side note is it normal for the speedo needle to move when you hit the dash above the speedo i tried giving it a few smacks to see if it would work and the needle started bouncing each time i hit it. i'm kinda lost at this point and don't know what i should check any help would be great..

 

VSS A doesn't drive the speedo. It's interpreted by the ECU for other engine and transmission control. Speedo is driven off of the reference signals from your ABS/Traction wheel speed sensors. If these are all functioning correctly, you may have a faulty cluster. Can't tell you what happens when you bang on the dash. Mine is 20 years old and I don't want to buy another.
