Default Spark plug change interval

Hey guys,

I have a 2000 GS300 and the owners manual says to change the plugs every 4 years or 60k. I am now approaching the 4 year mark, but I've only done about 42k. My question is, should I go by the time interval (4 years) or wait until the plugs hit 60k? Oddly, I have referenced later owner manuals with this generation/same engine (pre 2006) and the interval is 6 years or 60k--a much longer time interval. What is everyone's thoughts on this?

There can be engineered changes in the engine/car year to year. It's often to meet pollution regulations. Two reasons why I would change the plugs now. 1) car is not running well/drop in fuel economy. 2) your state does smog inspections and your car won't pass. You can check that easily with an OBD2 reader, most auto part stores will check that for free. If it fails or is close to failing, buy your plugs from them if you are a DIY person. I'm certain that there are youtube videos and club lexus threads to walk you through it.
Please let us know your outcome so we can all learn from you.

My 2c ... the only issue with time and plugs is a potential of ceasing in the block. To me Lexus chose an interval based on the testing they did which may include harsh environment and they had to spec something that falls in line with other recommended services.

If yours has been garage kept, I would wait for the milage.

I haven't changed the plugs yet on my 2002 GS300 with 72K, although I'm planning on it soon. Some advice learned from the plugs in my 2006 Mazda MX-5. One of them started to miss just after I bought it @84K. They were very difficult to remove, requiring extreme effort with lots of squealing. I turned each of them out at least half a turn and put a drop of Kroil penetrating oil on each one. The next day they came out much easier. The new plugs went in with a light but thorough coat of anti-seize.
