Do you plan to mod any? If $20k is the max you're looking to spend, I would say go with the 400. More bang for the buck. You may have to go with one that has 65K+ miles though.

i do plan on some mod's and i could go over $20k. i would just like to stay around there, but i've been looking at gs 400 up to $28-29k. don't really want to go that high. where is a good place to look for these. i've tried traderonline, ebay, yahoo, edmunds. anywhere else? also is there a big difference with the maintence between the 300/400? thanks for all your help! =)

No different.
they are the same car (one V6 one V8), HP/TQ is something you must have? if so, then you definitely want a GS400, unless you gonna spend another $5-6K to turbo charge a GS300 (but that is an option)

I have been cruising the autotrader myself just getting a feel for pricing on these models. Keep one thing in mind, 20k for a 99+ is a REALLY low price (dealer wants 32-35k Certified), so buyer beware. I really want to stay around the 40-55k mark for my next car (fact powertrain warranty still in effect). You should try to do the same to avoid potential maintence $$$. Just my .02

I just used advanced search at autotrader.com for GS400 under 29,000 for any distance and found many GS4 under 40,000 miles. One example in Southern CA is 98 GS4 with 26K miles for $26,997. Some of these are under $25K but they are in the midwest and east coast. I found mine low-mileage GS4 earlier this year on autotrader. The maintenace cost will be slightly higher for the GS4 when you replace the timing belt and water pump but that's at 90K miles. Have fun shopping for your GS.

Powertrain warranty is good up to 70,000 miles and 72 months. Bumper to bumper is 50,000 miles or 48 months if I remember it correctly.
