I, too, was undecided between a steering wheel cover and spending $400-500 for a wood wheel. I went back and forth for months and this cover from Wheelskins did the trick. A little more expensive than your typical wheel cover but looks pretty much OEM and fits like a glove. Note that it will take you 1-2 hours to put on but it's well worth it in the end.
Unless your steering wheel is ripped up and somehow poking your hands while you grip it, I don't see a reason to spend the money on on a cover just to get rid of it later on. Best best would be to check your local craigslist for any RX300s, SC430s, or possibly ES330 part outs. Those wheels should fit. Airbag and the connections on the back are a different story. I don't remember off the top of my head which bag and connection you need, but you can do the search here for it.
