Exclamation How much would it cost to repair this rust?

Got rust on my 2gs from the previous owner's botched window repair job.

Was told they scraped the metal frame but we're too lazy to check and it started developing rust underneath.

Now it's spreading and chipping away paint at the top. Even have a rust hole.

Any paint experts have an idea what this would cost to repair and paint over?

It would probably be easiest to tackle by just welding in a new roof skin, but I am no body expert by any means.

In my opinion, I don't know the current GS market in Chicago, but in the southern states GS's are cheap and plentiful...It might be easier to start with different vehicle.

Not worth fixing. I would pass and try to look for another car if possible. That looks horrid.

If it were me I would take it to a body shop and get an estimate. Let's say it's between $500-1,000 IMO it's worth it to get a few more years out of it. Especially if the rest of the car (engine, transmission, etc.) is in good working order. I'm not letting a little rust come between me and my GS

why did you allow it to spread badly? I say start over as a proper fix and paint will cost at least 50% of your car's worth.

That's a great question! I didn't....
Bought the car a year ago knowing it had with some rust however the paint hadn't peeled.

Want until this year it peeled and revealed how bad it really is.

My guess is rust is going back past the sunroof and what's concerning my decision to keep and fix or replace the car altogether

Definitely something a pro will need to look at. Let's say its $1,000 vs. $3,000...that's a big difference and something that will help you make your decision. I'm no pro but I do know if I see any spots on my GS (I'm in NC so I don't see many unlike when I lived in NY which was all the time) I prime and paint them right away. Anyway, keep us posted.

Ask a bodyshop. Even if someone here knows what they're talking about, there's no guarantee it'll reflect labour costs in your town.
