Default New to the lexus club

Hey guys, I'm new to lexus and got my first one. It's a 1998 GS400 with 250,000 miles. I've had it for a few months and it drives great! My problem is I need a new power steering pump and don't know if I need to go aftermarket or go OEM? The Indy shop quoted me 900.00 to replace but another shop said 400.00. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, if you are mechanically inclined you can do it yourself. It really isn't that hard just a bit messy. As for the aftermarket or OEM question, I would say OEM...because I went with cheap autozone crap and my new pump is loud as hell (more so than my oem one). Obviously a 500 dollar difference between two shops makes me say go with the cheaper one. But again, if you can do it yourself, go that route. Whatever your plan is: do it soon. Because, I will guess that your pump is leaking, and it's leaking onto the alternator. This kills the alternator...

I tried to find a "how to video" and can't seem to find one. What all do I need, tool wise, to change pump? And thanx! I will have my lexus dealer order the pump for me and will replace myself.

You can always look for an oem used gs430 or sc430 pump. Do not go aftermarket. Replaced mine the first time with an aftermarket and it started leaking all over again... so this time I did it right and got a used low mileage sc430 pump and it's night and day.

Default p/S PUMP

My advice its not worth getting an used pump. Steering is safety, the other problem you wouldnt know if its good until you start your vehicle. Buy the new oem pump.

It's pricey but definitely go OEM. You might as well plan on changing the alternator, too, as mine went out 1-2 months after fixing the power steering.

If you get any new pump, whether aftermarket or OEM, get one with a warranty. There's no warranty on used parts so if you get one that fails the next week, you're SOL.
