Is the CEL code you are getting P0446? If it is I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have been getting that code off and on for at least five years. I just reset it every time it comes on. Sometimes it will be back in a week or two, sometimes I can go months without it coming on. Get yourself a cheap ebay Bluetooth OBD code reader and reset the code whenever you need to. Much less headache than changing out the canister.Originally Posted by tmf2004
Recently got a CEL about a month ago and it turned out to be the Charcoal Canister. It kills me to spend this much money on a vehicle that is almost 20yrs old.. The part alone i was quoted $1200... Found one on ebay for about half that brand new.. I may go that route. I didn't think these failed but i guess with age any part can fail.. Currently sitting at 81k miles and pretty much daily the car about 90% of the time...

If you have an iOS device you want to use an app on, go with a wifi OBD reader. If you want to use android, go bluetooth.
I replaced my filler cap, just to take that out of the equation. I still got the CEL a few tanks after that.
Yes, you may be able to remove and replace the VSV at the canister with out removal of the whole assembly, others had done it; as shown in this link Brian posted, https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...446-w-pic.html
I tried and could not do it. I did manage to test the VSV and check for cracked lines in place, but I spent more time doing that than I did removing, repairing and reinstalling the whole assembly. This was one of my least favorite repairs I have preformed on the GS.
Good luck.

Yes I use the android torque app. Have used both an older full blown version and a newer torque lite version. Both work fine.

Hey Tony. I have the exact same problem going on.
Occasional P0446 from a bad canister/ VSV and an O2 sensor CEL.
Torque works wonders for clearing these codes. Not the best solution but at least will hold you over until you replace the canister.
Try it out and let us know what you think!
