Default Steering Intermediate Shaft TSB

Still have a clunk after replacing the entire front end. Last culprits are the steering rack bushings or the steering intermediate shaft. I think it's the shaft. I have the toyota grease syringe. Anyone have directions on how to perform the procedure?

When do you hear the clunking ?
I doubt it's the shaft, I can't recall if the GS had problems with it but if they did, I think it would be more of a sqeaky/rubbing type noise. But if you wanna lubricate it, all you have to do is lubricate the bottom end of the shaft where the boot is.

My cluck I found was the brake caliper on drivers side. Ride the brake over bumps and if it goes away then that's it.

To much play on caliber ,worn pins. I'm installing LS brakes ,just need some RCA 's

The clunk happens after the car sits for a while (overnight). When I get in in the morning it will clunk but only when turning the steering wheel. If I back straight out my parking spot, no noise. As soon as I turn the wheel, clunk. You can kinda fell it in the wheel too. If I sit there turning the wheel back and forth it will keep clunking. It is just a single clunk. If I move the car with the wheel turned, it is quiet. There is play somewhere in the system so that when turning the wheel and reaching a certain point, it is clunking. Then lets say I drive it for a mile or two, the clunk goes away for the rest of the day unless it sits for like 12 hours or something.

Everything on the front end has been changed. I tried spraying chain lube down the boot in the past and I changed 2 of the 3 steering rack bushing in the past (didn't change the hard to reach one). I don't remember what brand bushings I used, I know some of those bushings can suck.

Sounds like it could possibly come from the rack and pinion bushings. I use to have a clunking type noise that I could feel in the steering wheel when backing into a parking spot, it didn't happen all the time but I did notice it would do it more when the car was cold. I replaced them with figs solid bushings and the noise went away.

At this point I recommend you replace them with some quality bushings, plus their not expensive or hard to do. Btw did you replace the inner and outter tie rods ?

I plan to do Figs poly bushings if I don't do anything with the shaft. I have changed upper/lower control arms, inner/outer tie rods, lower ball joints, sway bar bushings/links, and lower control arm #2 (full oem arms). Just changed rear sway bushings again also. I love the car and had a lot of plans for it but am starting to get tired of it (have had it for 9 years). Sucks to be doing all this maintenance and will never get any of the money back.
