The reason I say the new 7 series is not selling as well....is because we were at a BMW dealer looking at cars for my brother about 3 weeks ago. I hate talking with the sales guys and go straight to the sales manager. We started talking and we got on the topic of the 7 series.
I asked about the styling on the car and he said it is controversial "either you like it or hate it" I asked him if they were selling a lot of them. He said yes, but the reason is because most people who buy this car lease them through a business. Guess what the lease is on this car....about $699 to $800 bucks. That is cheap compared to a S500 lease which can reach about $1500/month. Both cars are almost in the same class....but their is a huge difference in lease prices. If it were my choice, I would pay half the price and get the bimmer and still have top dog status.
The reason the 7 Series is selling is because the lease rates are so good "Incentives"
When it comes to the flagships, I believe the top status level goes to the:
1. Mercedes S class
2. BMW 7 series
3. Lexus LS 430
I think Lexus can go higher but they have to stop taking such a conservative design approach. If you think about it the body style still resembles the 1990 LS400. Which was a knockout when it first came out. I think we can all agree that the design of LS430 is getting a bit dated.
The overal boring styling trend from Lexus has been disturbing for all of us CLers because we don't want to see our beloved GS look like the ES!
I find Lexus has the only product line where all their cars don't look alike. Infiniti as well. Besides the LS 430, what Lexus looks boring? Even the SUVs don't look generic, maybe the GX. Even ugly is not boring.
From my understanding, BMW is offering rebates on the 7 for the first time to spur sales. Also, they have NEW buyers but have totally alienated loyalists. Hell, loyalists are complaining about the M cars saying they are just getting too heavy.
They are the 2nd most profitable car co. behind Porsche, so they kinda know what they are doing.

There will be a facelift later this year.

Seems like though folks might have issues with it (iDrive, Styling, etc..) they are selling quite well.
Several ways to read that. First of, as has been said, most are leased, not sold and they're offering LOW lease rates on them right now. Also, no surprise that 2000 and 2001 sales dropped off sharply with the intro of the LS430 and new S-class, the older 7 series was looking VERY old. 2002 sales aren't doing that much better than 1999. Having said that, the economy is down so that may be hurting sales too.
