Default A/C Hot Air, not refrigerant or compressor

My old man's '02 GS300 sat for 3 weeks while he was on vacation (no issues before he left).

Now, all he gets is hot air.
A/C light stays lit, solid.
compressor is spinning. (stops spinning if you toggle off the A/C)
He bought a can of refrigerant and it shows to be a little overcharged, so he didn't add any.

We ran through the AC Diagnostics and he gets code 21 and 24; however, no beeps, so this should mean they are old codes. I had him pull out into the sun and try again, and he still gets 21 and 24.

All that being said, the only other thing i've found is the servo motors.

I understand that there are 2 motors (driver and passenger). since both zones are blowing hot air, it seems a little odd that both motors went out at the same time??

Since the drivers motor is easier to get to, i'd be willing to give it a try, but i just wanted to see if there was anything else i could check first.

The shop he frequents was quick to blame the Evaporator leak, with a large pricetag, but that makes no sense if it is holding a charge and the compresor is working.

Any help is appreciated!

Rad-man,

Check this DIY:

DIY: Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Replacement

2000 gs 300 A/C has warm air blowing

Also, if you want to do this, do with the car cool. The A/C in ours car have 4 servor motos.

Your not diagnosing your A/C...
Until you hook up gauges to the system you will be wasting time and money.

Find a set of gauges and learn how to read them, or find someone to do it for you.
Most likely you will find an internal compressor failure.

I had a professional hook up gauges.

The high side was reading 150, and the low side was around 130.

He was saying that when holding the RPM at 1500-2000, he expected to see the high side go up, but it didnt move at all.

His guess was the compressor.

Now i have to decide if i we want to spend $1k+ on a car that's only worth $3-4k.....

...It was not a guess. You paid for a proper diagnosis and you got it. Money well spent.

If you are mechanically inclined, you can change out the compressor and dryer yourself and have your professional vacuum and charge your system.

My fear is that something else needs to be done that will really put a dent in the wallet.
My dad talked to someone that said that "parts from the compressor could have come apart and clogged the evaporator". Which would easily be another $1k.

Where would you recommend purchasing a compressor from?

the parts would probably get clogged in the condenser before it reaches the evaporator.

I would buy a new Denso unit from your favorite parts store along with a new dryer/accumulator.
I like Rockauto...

If you are concerned about metal shaving and such getting passed the dryer/accumulator then buy a new condenser.

With two compressor failures on both my GS' my course of action was to replace the bad compressor and dryer/accumulator. 3 years and 1 year ago.

My old man ended up buying a 2011 RX350. The dealer offered $3k for the GS, but my buddy decided to buy it instead.

So now it still needs a new compressor/condenser... Parts are $370 on Rock Auto.
