I have the P0440 code on my 99 Lexus GS 300. I understand the charcoal canister costs around $500.00. Is there an aftermarket canister or one from a different vehicle I can use that's no so expensive?
Thanks

Diagnose the issue first, it could be as simple as a dislocated or cracked vacuum line.
It would really suck for you to have the same code come up after you spend your money on a new one.
FYI no aftermarket.

99% of the time (if its the canister) its actually the valve and not the canister itself. Do some searching, theres a write up of someone who showed pics of how corroded the valve got due to the elements and it being out in the open as it is. The valve gets stuck open and throws a code. Mine code has been on for like 3-4 years cause I'm too lazy to do the job of removing the canister. Look below, the part number is 9091012271 #77740N in the pic only $72 or $28 on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dorman-911-602-Vacuum-Switching-Valve-Replaces-OE-90910-12271-/350751961876?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item51aa723314&vxp=mtr

But as said above, find a shop to run a 'fog' test to see where the leak is coming from. Could even be just your gas cap.
