My 2000 GS300 has locking wheel nuts but no actual way of taking them off. All I have is a bright green envelope with the locking wheel nut information. Anyone know how much it costs to get the wheel nut "key" made?

 

One option, go to your local dealer with the information. Or take the car there so they can match it up. There are about 10 or 12 different designs. You don't get one made. Or better yet, have them take off the 4 locking nuts and get standard ones so you never have to worry about it again.

 

The dealership should have one that matches up with yours assuming It's a McGard lock nut. I believe they're $16+ tax for a new key.

 

IME the Toyota/McGard is a 21 mm hex. McGard's aftermarket keys are usually NOT that size. Its been years, but McGard had really great customer service and actually answered phone, but after several attempts to buy a replacement key from them, my father had to go to dealer and buy for greater than McGards key price the Toyota sourced key. Consider buying two if you get lock #. I put one key in small baggy in glove box and one in spare tire well. Also, IMO, its not a bad idea to have at least ONE extra OEM non-locking lug nut in trunk in case you've got to mount spare tire.

If you or trusted mechanic loosen and tighten McGard by hand, perhaps with sliding "T" handle and 6-point socket, one key and set of locks can last a long time IME. As per McGards suggestions, remove first and install last.

Now if tire monkeys go at them with 7/8" or 22 mm socket and pneumatic wrench to loosen/tighten, all bets are off! I will often remove lock and reinstall after service. If not, verify you have lock and its condition before leaving payment window.

Off topic: I once had mechanic leave a McGard key under seat. It eventually made its way to seat track where it concealed itself until after I bough replacement!
