Default Massive mechanical overhaul of my GS

Hello CL! I know I've been MIA from the boards for a while but I'm still around...

Anyway, my GS recently experienced some mechanical issues (running hotter than normal, a lag in shifting, weak acceleration, etc.) so I decided to take it in to my mechanic for some TLC. Here's what I had done:

Water Pump replaced
Timing belt replaced
Timing belt tensioner/idler pulley replaced
Replaced cam seals
Replaced crank seal
Replaced thermostat & tstat gasket
New coolant
Replaced alternator
Oil change (synthetic)
Transmission replaced
Rear main seal replaced
New transmission fluid/filter
Complete tune up (wires, spark plugs, etc.)
Replaced valve cover gaskets
Replaced VVT-I pulley (it was leaking)
Replaced misc. small hoses in engine bay
Replaced air filter

My bill in the end....$2,583.85...that's the biggest auto repair bill I've ever paid!! The GS is running much better now but after dropping that much I expected it to feel like a Ferrari or something lol

What do you guys think? Was that a decent price for the work? My mechanic is a Toyota certified master tech with over 20 years experience and only uses OEM parts. He also fixes little stuff he comes across and doesn't charge you for every single little thing like the dealer.

goddamn.

how much to replace rear main seal?!
that seems like one of the most difficult jobs listed.
but i guess sort of a throw-in with the transmission...

Yeah, believe me it didn't feel good handing over that much cash, but I was contemplating buying a new car and this was the lesser of two evils.

The labor for replacing the tranny along with the rear main seal was $320.

2500 parts and labor?? if so, that's a good deal considering all the stuff you replaced. i know the dealership most likely would have charged 1500 over that, their parts markup and labor rate is ridiculous.

All things considered, not too bad a price. Definitely much cheaper than the dealer would have charged, especially considering a tranny swap was included. Although I probably would have saved a bit by doing some of it myself.

Good to see stuff like this. It kinda sucks dropping money on this thinking what u could have bought to mod with... but it's more important. Plus that is a really good price for all of that. Great job!
