Default Remove your engine cover

Changed my spark plugs today and noticed that the plastic wire loom that wraps the wires going to the coilpacks was crumbling apart. This is a 2000 GS400 with 59k original miles. I bought the car in CA and apparently it was used as a commuter sitting in traffic in the heat. I can't help but think the plastic engine cover was holding heat in that area and contributed to the corrosion. Although it looks cleaner with the cover installed, it is not worth the wear and tear to wiring and hoses!

I wont touch the cosmetic part of the issue, but similar problem happened to me on my RX. Solution is to get high temp wire loam (with a slit) and use a coat hanger to suspend it. Letting the wires droop and touch the hot head is not a good idea.

how was the install.... I need to do this eventually...

Spark plug install is pretty straightforward. There are good DIY threads on here if you need them. My coilpacks were really wedged in there. On one the top separated from the lower rubber portion. Wiggle them back and forth, and once you get them started wedge your fingers on the underside so you are pulling up on the rubber boot portion not just the top plastic. I managed to get the rubber boot out on the one that separated and it popped right back together. The car runs like a champ so I don't think it did any damage.

Give me your email and I can send a pic. Basically there is plastic gray loom that covers the wires to the coilpacks. If I even touched it or moved the wires it just crumbled right off. The car is low mileage, but it is 13yo regardless and the combination of time and heat just deteriorated the stuff. A few of the vacuum lines under the engine cover were very hard and will be brittle soon as well, so I will have to replace those. The throttle body was spotlesss when I went to clean it. I sprayed out the MAF sensor and tightened a few valve cover bolts (one was very loose- I could turn it with my fingers, but it was not leaking anywhere). All in all, I can't complain. It took me a long time to find a white GS400 with low mileage (2000 Platinum Edition). I gave up waiting to find one in white with black interior!

His wiring loom is also crumbling. I tore the rest of it off on my car and vacuumed out all the bits that were sitting on the valve covers.
