Default Quick question on starting problem..

My wife has a 2000 GS400. She came out to go to work the other day and the car wouldn't crank. At first, I thought it was the starter, but it turns over. Just doesn't start. Tries to, just didn't run. After I charge the battery a while, it might crank and run, but just for a few seconds and dies. My question is this...Does it sound like a fuel problem or a alternator/ generator problem? The battery is only about a year old. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I want to try to do it myself first, hopefully to save a few dollars and learn a bit more. Thanks!!

Bad gas, drop an Alla-seltzer in the gas tank. Jk don't really do that.

Air, gas, power ...

Air filter?
Add dry-gas to the tank.
If battery is full charged, it should run for a bit untill it is drained when the alternator is bad.

Check those things, follow back with update

Added a little fresh gas, cranked up. Stalled. Cranked again, ran fine, smoke coming out of the exhaust. Smelled like something burning. Recranked it a few times, no smoke, but still a lingering smell of burning out of the exhaust. BTW, thanks for the reply.
