Default Please Help! CEL turns on and off. Read my threda please..

Hello CL. My 2001 Lexus GS430 has been turning on and off the CEL since I've bought it early Feb 2012. At first, I took it to the Lexus dealer immediately after purchase for a complete diagnostic. The salesman there told me after the job was completed that the catalystic converter had a minor crack in it and that thru time that will cause the CEL to turn on due to unneccassary induction of air thru the pipes. Moving on. Not too long there after, that's exactly what happened. Being that I live in PA and I bought the car in NY, I scheduled an appointment to have the problem fixed at the dealer in which I bought it. Surprisingly on my way there, the light turned off. After my appointment, the guy there said it was a little hairline crack in one of the converters and that he had a certified welder close it up and installed 2 new gaskets on both converters. Ever since then the CEL ha been and off. Lately it's been staying on more then way before. The car is working smooth. No problems. I think it may be something to do with the 02 sensors? If not that, maybe changing all my exhaust gaskets migh help? Please, CL OGs give me some helpful advice. Any advice is deeply appreciated. Btw, my car was bought with 75k miles and now has roughly around 84k miles if that helps.

You need to get the current code. Until we have that all we can offer is speculation.

Ok my friend. Just got it scanned at my local AAP store. They used an Actron AutoScanner Plus first off. The code that came up was :PO430, Catalyst System, Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2. I'm familiar with my exhaust system. I was under there yesterday. I also have a diaphragm of all the o2 sensor locations. I'm possibly thinking it may be an exhaust leak (I pray it's that). Yesterday I lifted the car and turned it on but i detected no holes or small cracks in either catalysts up front nor the back one before the 2 pipes split. Neither did I see any noticeable leaks. But I do recall a small water leak right after I took out the car from the garage. Please Debonair, I've seen you in many threads and I know your a very wise mechanic lol. Please my friend any suggestions??? Thanks for replying to my thread by the way.

I appreciate the compliment but I would rate myself as an average mechanic/technician that happens to have access to a particularly helpful amount of information and some very talented people. There are many other members who are far more experienced and talented then I. That said...

P0430:
Exhaust leak
Faulty oxygen sensor
Faulty catalytic converter

This is a Bank 2 code AKA right bank AKA passenger side bank.

Pre or post cat? Lot's of times cat codes will flag the CEL light, when in fact it an O2 sensor acting up. Even if you're not sure your cats are good, try swapping sensors "post" cats. My CEL would come on intermittently for a couple of years before I finally got around to replacing my 2 post cat sensors. Light hasn't come back on once since.

Once the weather cools off this fall I'll put in the pre cat sensors. Probably don't need them, but wth, I've already got them, might as well use them.

Replace your sensors first!!

thank you so much. ima start off by replacing all my gaskets with oem Lexus ones from sewell. then after that ima see if the CEL remains on. if so, after that ima just replace all 4 sensors with brand new NGK sensors. i been meaning to do that since I bought. i can all 4 for around $380 off eBay. Debonair thank you so much buddy.

thanks my friend. ima start off with the gaskets just because I feel its vital to my cars exhaust system. but I am gonna buy all 4 sensors. i hav a quick question. how do I remove post cat sensors? i know the pre cat sensors are a mess to remove but with patience and some dedication it can be a good DIY task. but the post cat sensors, in my diaphragm I have printed out it looks like i have to take my carpet off from the inside to remove plugs? am i close? if so, how can i do that without making a huge mess or destroying my plush carpet, just got it detailed :-). ill try swapping them if that helps in the mean while. please any suggestions on how o remove those post cat sensors? maybe any threads i can possible read with helpful pics. please my friend, thank you so much for taking the time out to read my thread and giving suggestions.

Start with this.

In the interest of full disclosure: I didn't actually remove mine from the mid pipe. My mid-pipe developed a nasty exhaust leak at one of the cat side flanges, so I replaced the whole mid-pipe, and the rest of the exhaust, with the sensors still in place. Just put the new O2 sensors in the new pipe. Yes, the CEL was coming on BEFORE any exhaust leak occurred, so I know it wasn't the leak causing the light.

And yes, you'll have to lift your carpet to get to the plugs. It sounds worse that it really is.
