I have 130K on my 2005 GS300. I was thinking about changing the fuel pump as a precautionary measure. How long do these things last. Am I crazy for thinking about changing this thing?
Well it's cheap and easy to do if you really want to. They seem to not really be a problem in these cars as there are plenty of members with way more miles on the car than that.
The stock pump will last a LOOOONG time. I had a guy come in with a car that had 350k miles! Still running on the stock pump. If you really want to do some maintenance on the fuel system, then replace the fuel filter cartridge. If you let the fuel run low very often, that may cause earlier pump failure as well. If you don't then you should be fine.
Like Jeff mentioned, try not to let the gas get low enough before you fill up again. Driving with low fuel exposes the pump and damages it from excess heat. The pump is submerged in the tank to keep it cool
