Is yours accurate? My gauge seems to always say I have less gas then I really do. I get MAYBE 250 miles and I am already 1/4 tank, and the light comes on. Even my nav system tells me I only have like 30 miles left until I'm empty. But when I fill it up, I still have like 8-9 gallons left. What's up with this?
I've had this car for 6 months, and it has been like this from the beginning. Anyone else?

99GS4. No Nav. 20 gal tank.
I usually drive till I get the warning light, then drive an extra 30-50 miles, then fill it up. Never have I put 18 or more gallons in at the gas station (usually 17ish) under this strategy. So my guess is that the light comes on with 4-5 gals remaining.
I reset my A/B trip odometer every time I fill the tank. My mpg/range is quite predictable. Based on experience, depending on the type of driving I do, I usually get gas at the 300 (17mpg) or 400(24mpg) mile mark; that leaves 3ish gallons in the tank.
Your light sounds premature, but that tends to be the case if you drive lots of short distances. As for the NAV, I have no experience with it, but 30 miles left and 8 gallons doesn't seem to jive.

I drove my GS430 when even my nav system tells me I only have 0 miles left until I'm empty! So I know they build in a safety factor. Its better that way because it is less likely you will run out of gas.

The manual emphasises that Lexus does not want you to run the tank dry.
I suspect that the few moments of running lean before you run out can harm valves, pistons, etc., and since there is no gas left there is nothing the computer can do to get the mixture where it should be.
So, my take is the early warning light is their way of helping you avoid potential engine damage.
