If you use the chain wrench to hold the harmonic balancer/pulley, I am not so sure that would be a good idea. I have heard that on some cars it is possible to damage the balancer using this technique.
You just have to be easy with it. I cut a thick rubber pipe down the middle and wrapped it around the balancer along with lots of rags. If you dont put stuff over the balancer to protect it, the teeth on the chair can damage the ridges on the pulley.

That is absolutely correct. If you look at the design of the balancer you will see that it is made up of 2 pieces fused together with rubber. The rubber is a known weak link on them. If you are removing a pulley where that rubber is compromised using the chain method you will not have a good day.
