Good morning CL!

I need some help in the torque value area. Yesterday I rebuilt my starter and remove my valve covers to replace the gaskets. I've cleaned everything and am now ready to put everything back together.

I am having troubles locating torque values and the tightening patterns for the manifold and valve covers. I've done numerous searches with no luck. Would someone have this information that they could share?

And it is a 400 btw...

I was able to find torque values for anyone looking to change out their starter or replace their valve cover gaskets. I noticed a lot of threads from the past asking for these values with no answers. Hope this helps out a lot of peeps!

spark plugs--13 ft lbs
upper to the lower intake manifold--13 ft lbs
injector fuel tube to the intake manifold--13 ft lbs
lower intake manifold to the head--13 ft lbs
rear water bypass joint--13 ft lbs
starter--27 ft lbs
starter wire--87 in lbs
valve cover--53 in lbs
coil pack to the valve cover--no value...just a little tweek
rear air intake valve--27 in lbs
valve cover spark plug gaskets will need to be pryed out and press in--im doing this today so I'll let you know what I find out
throttle body--13 ft lbs

 

Almost done with my project. I need to get the spark plug gaskets pressed into the valve cover and I will be ready to put that back on.

 

All done and it turned out great! Above are some torque values that are handy to have around. Never go wrong with the proper torque values. Cheers!!

 

Good info to add for the future searches!

87lbs is a lot of torque on the power wire nut.. That bolt can spin inside the housing and cause the contact on the inside to turn enough to not make contact when the solenoid tries to engage.

There is a second nut on the bolt to hold still with a wrench while you tighten the top nut down, so just be careful and if you here the solenoid pop out but don't hear it spin that is exactly what happened.

Easy fix out of the car, just take off the solenoid cap and line the contact back up, but it is a pain once it's back in the car already.

I didn't have a good tool to get into that tight spot to put a torque on it. So I put it in there with my calibrated elbow. I dont' think it's going to come off. But yes I do know what you're talking about with the loud popping noise. I got that when I hooked my battery up to make sure the starter was engaged. Didn't want to get every put together only to find out it was spinning freely.
