Your Mechanic is correct the Manifold Gaskets (2) should be replaced to avoid problems. Its either kinked or old and not holding a seal, hence why you are having idle/air issue. You can smoke the mani to check for leaks, im sure you'll find them around the gasket

PS. Just because nobody here changed them it does not mean is the correct way.
