How does navigation work??
ok i always wondered how navigation worked. is there a keyboard or something to type in the adress of where you want to go and it shows you directions there. like turn here go here and turn here. or is there only like a few major places you could pick from on a list to go to. also is there some sort of antenna on the car that tells them where you are so it could know when to tell you when to turn at certain streets and stuff?? if there is an antenna what happens if you go out of range or you have no reception. also i also heard it runs of a cd?? doesn't it run off a cd"
Yes, you can type in a address with a onscreen keyboard (at least on the Lexus factory Nav which is a touchscreen...I believe Kenwood is also)
Then the navigation will tell you how to get there...where to turn (and how far the turn is from you), etc., etc...the Lexus nav system also talks TO YOU...basically echoing the instructions...
The car has a built-in rear window antennae...there is also a gyroscope so the car keeps track of where you are after it gets some "location" signals from the GPS Satellites...it checks every so often to make sure your GPS location and your "calculated" location is the same...it auto corrects (to the GPS location) if you're off...there is a little GPS box on the screen that tells you if you're getting signal from all 3 or 4 satellites (I forget how many it uses...I think 3)...if you're not getting a signal (from all 3/4), then you will know (in which case is falls back to the "calculated" location based on the speedo/gyro and your last verfied location)
The nav unit uses a DATA DVD, not a CD ...mostly for the POI (Points Of Interest)...
The best way to know how it works is to go into a dealership and have them show you, it's quite a nice system, I wish I had it in my SC400....oh well, at least my GS430 has it!
