Default GS300 MK2 MPG fuel economy

hey guys

just wondering about fuel economy and MPG.

i have gs300 mk2 with standard wheels and stnadard exhaust i was getting about 85-90 miles out of 20 liter petrol. (in town)

since i have changed my exhaust and wheels now i only get about 65 miles out of 20 liter petrol. ( in town )

20 liter petrol and 65 miles in town is that normal average ?

do you think there is some thing wrong with my car ?

cheers

Depends on how hard you drive the car. You should normally be getting at least a bit over 100 miles for 20 liters if I did the liters-to-gallons conversion correctly.

65 miles per 20 liters is roughly about 3.4 miles per liter or 13 miles per gallon give or take some.

So yeah, your gas mileage is relatively low as I get about 19-21 miles per gallon or 5 miles per liter. You should consider taking a look at the intake system, namely the MAF sensor. You should also consider buying a new drop-in intake filter or just buying a new intake system. I think you would be better off taking it to a mechanic so they can see if there's any restriction in your intake/exhaust.

There are too many factors to correctly diagnose your problem over the internet. It could be anything from intake/exhaust, to bad sensors, or bad injectors.

Before you do anything else, try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and then reconnecting it to reset the ECU. This seems to be a fix for quite a few problems.

Sounds like I'm going to have to do that MAF sensor also I'm thinking that I get about 275 miles to a tank around town.

If you went to 20's from stock, most likely you could be losing mileage because of larger diameter of the wheels. Just one thought.

I have wheels, exhaust, and system and I always get over 20 mpg in my 2GS300. But I drive slow.

I'm sure that your driving slow so that everyone can see the ride...But I'm going to check my MAF and see what happens when I clean it...

Make sure you use MAF cleaner and not carb or brake clean!

thanks for inputs guys..

well i did give my car good check today and i think there are few things which are / were causing problem.

1. i noticed front both brakes were binding
2. air filter was filthy as hell. dead flies, fluff, grass etc and i even found 2 dead snails
3. my car battery totally died few weeks ago so i believe by changing battery i have done some sort of ECU reset and while ecu is learning car is consuming more fuel.
4. my mechanic told me in cold winters car consumes more fuel ? i think hes telling me porky pies. is he ?

my findings so far....any more suggestions please keep them coming

thanks fellas

In cold months, I think the engine runs rich (more gas in the gas / air mix) b/c it takes longer for the engine to heat up and operate normally according to the various sensors.

If your air filter is crap, chances are your MAF needs a clean too. If your MAF is dirty, the car will run rich

Dont forget to send some good scotch to your new friends at CL

Your mechanic is right. You do tend to burn more gas in the winter time. Along with cleaning your MAF and changing you filter, i would also do a fuel injection cleaning, intake manifold cleaning, gas additive, and oil treatment. Also, depending on your mileage, spark plugs might need to be changed.
