i was wondering if anyone has ever painted the outer tail lights all red i have the 98 tails with the orange in the middle and i was thinking about geting the 01+ tails then thought about how it would look if i painted mine lol.i got this idea from people painting there faded inners..what do you guys think?

yah...its been done. I've also seen a few who have used red tints over their tails (except the reverse light)...looks nice.

 

i'd just spring for the newer tails. they look 1000x cleaner than the older ones imo.

 

yup, and the 01+ tails are around $300 brand new with bulbs & harnesses included

 

The 01+ tails look clean and update your ride but if you are on a budget you could rock the red tint over the amber stripe (not the white reverse, as PHML said) and it is very hard to see that it's vinyl.
