Got mine today but this latest version is still Sept 01. Since I got mine for free I asked the dealer how much it would have cost me, she said that would have been $500. But DVD based systems are more, about $600.
I noticed that with the update, the maps are clearer and there's more white background which tend to bring up higher contrast. It's nicer.
Yeah, I also got mine for free- but actually think they overcharged me on my mirror and factored in the update price in it, cuz i dont know the OEM on the driver side mirror.

Of course. The database is re-released by navtech each September but Lexus doesn't get them into parts available until about December/January, so Sept 01 is the latest database.
I hope to get a free upgrade shortly too since I found some bugs in my Sept 00 version.

I've found at least one street which is shown as 'LLLLLLLLLLL>' (a data corruption problem) and if I select Previous Destination and scroll to some entry I made the whole system resets.
As for higher resolution, that's not possible without changing the screen.

I feel that the resolution has not been used to the full potential. Honda/Acura NAVs have much better resolution maps, and I don't think the Lexus NAV can't do the same with the screen. Sucks.

I don't agree they have much better resolution maps, they have SMALLER SCREENS so the pixels and lines look thinner.

well it's not the small screen that makes it better resolution. If that small screen can get a high resolution, then why can't the Lexus screen be large AND have high resolution?
The new DVD based NAV screen is much hight resolution then we have now, and it is also much bigger. Just be glad you have it at all, our HD based system is still awesome although the newer ones are better. That's the price of change.

It's called 'cost'. Just like a 12" XGA laptop screen looks 'crisper' than a 14" XGA laptop screen (both 1024x768). The smaller one looks crisper because the pixels are actually smaller. To go to an XGA+ or something 14" screen (1280x1024) costs a good bit more.
The '01- DVD screen IS bigger (wider at least) and may have higher pixel density too. Bear in mind when the system in the '98-'00 was being developed... probably '96-'97 - that's a long time ago.
