For the smell start trying to locate it. Does it start as soon as the car starts or only after the car is hot? Look around the under hood exhaust components and see if anything is making contact. Also look under the car to make sure you have not run over a plastic bag and its melting on the exhaust under the car.

As far as your steering wheel being all over the place have your tires checked for bubbles and tread separation. Have your steering linkage checked for damage and wear (Balljoints?). It may also be as simple as a wheel weight fell off and now you are way out of balance or your alignment got thrown way off on one side and is now fighting the otherside for what direction to travel.

Just for clarification: What is your definition of wheel hop?

I don't not believe this would be considered wheel hop, its more the like standard 2GS Vibration. I get it at 60 and 80. It was at 65-75 before I replaced my wheels. Have you tried rotating your wheels front to back?

IF it is wheel hop you may have a bad strut/coilover or a loose axle. Way out of balance wheels can do this too but your wheel balancing rules this out. It would be at most speeds too.

Just throwing this out there in case your two conditions are related...... I had a Jag with a caliper that was partially frozen if I remember correctly? It would drive with no issue at first, but after about 10 mins or so in stop-n-go traffic, you could smell the brakes burning, and the steering would vacillate back and forth pretty violently. Then, after stopping and letting it cool down, it would return back to some semblance of normalcy for another 10 - 20 minutes of driveability. Not sure if that's what you're experiencing, but something to think about...
