Unhappy Simple Question any assistance appreciated

I own a 01 GS300 163K on it ... Tranny needs rebuild, rear Diff. seal needs replacing, Valve seals need replacing etc.... total cost of repair $3250 - 4250. Do i
1. Fix it since i owe nothing on it
2. Do i buy a 06-07 GS350/06 GS430

I am really torn.. i can afford the payments.. but hesitant because of the freedom of total Ownership.

3. Find used transmission/diff and have your mechanic install it. The tranny and diff rebuilding is going to cost a lot because of the labor involved in swapping out all the seals and clutch pack. It's much cheaper to get a used tranny off ebay. In fact, there is one right now for $600+freight and it only has 88k miles on it. BTW, an overhauling kit from lexus is already $1200+. You'll end up paying what it cost to take out the tranny plus rebuilding it.

This is probably the biggest part of your bill.

It doesn't make sense to spend $30k on a new car just so you dont have to spend ~2-3k to fix your current ride. That is unless you're itching for a new car already.

Yeah I agree with Henry. After spending about $1k rebuilding a tranny in my old car, going with a used one in good condition is the way to go.

BTW Henry, congrats on your $10 posts.

depends on how you much want a new car. I am guessing that a 3rd gen GS will be more to maintain than a 2nd gen GS

I always think of repair costs in relation to the value of the car. If your car is worth 8k then your repair are 50% of the car value. At 160K miles, you're probably looking at another timing belt, set of ball joints in the next 2-3 yrs(assuming these were changed once since new) so your 3yr repair bill is 4k-5k...

If your car is still in good shape. I'll go with option 3 unless you're tire of your car than option 2 is your choice

werewolf see thats how i thought of it.. the car is valued @ 5600K.. and i am gonna have to replace all this stuff.. then timing belt, ball joint that are an issue also, when it rains the wheels vibrate badly...
The used tranny is a good idea.. but my thing is suppose the used tranny has an issue also.. so 2yrs down the road i may have to face this again.. instead of a complete rebuild... or new car with warranty..
