First tomer (timing belt) did a search and need advice
I just recently picked up a 99 gs300 and after pulling the inspection cover (chasing an oil leak) found that my VVTI pulley is leaking. I did alot of searching and saw the write ups and I unerstand that you CANNOT move the cams or crank once the belt has been removed. How do you remove the VVTI pulley without moving the cam? While I am in there I want to do as much maintenance as possible. I understand from searching that cam seals/valve cover gaskets/water pump/timing belt/drive belt/spark plugs all need to be done at the same time. What else is needed? Are the cam seals on the end of the camshafts (on the front)? Are there any special tools needed to install the seals? I saw from searching that you need a special took for the crank pulley (balancer) where do I get one of those? I am familiar with v8 american engines but I have never worked on a foreign car? Any advice is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks

You can find a DIY in the search section of this forum. They tell you what kind of tools to use. Its a good idea to have all those parts replace at the same time but not necessary. The only I would do that is to eliminate the labor rates. Did you picked up this 99 from a private owner? should check all the maintenance records to see what else he/she'd done to the car first before getting it. Look in Search my friend..!!

I keep the belt on to loosen the VVT-i pulley bolt, while using a wrench to hold the intake cam, same with the exhaust cam gear.
Even if the belt is off, the cams will not move very much using a wrench to hold the cams.
Cam seals are under the front bearing caps. Remove the bearing caps, remove the seals.
Install the cam seals (after cleaning everything nice and clean) and install the bearing cap over the seal. The bearing cap requires a 2mm bead of silicone sealant before the install and double check the seal is square in its seat.
Check out my post New valve cover gasket, cam seals and VVT-i pulley

Remove timing belt, and turn the VVTi intake Cam gear as far clockwise as you can (you may want to turb it back and forth to loosen anything stuck - if it is stuck) Finish by turning it all the way clockwise without disturbing the camshaft. when the VVTi cam gear hits the stop point... make note of the timing mark. if its off. keep the VVTi cm gear turned all the way clockwise and now you have to rotate the camshaft counter clockwise to get the line up notches on the cam gear to match the cam cover.
