I don't think it looks all that bad. The concept is good... I would definitely use a laptop running Linux and wireless keyboard/mouse. The carputer offers more flexibility than a Pioneer navigation system but may not be as responsive or reliable.

The key to a carputer is getting a solid-state hard drive. Otherwise, a normal hard drive will fail after being exposed to the bumpy nature of autmobiling! Solid-state hard drives are pretty expensive, and to make it worthwhile, you're gonna want a big one to store movies/mp3's/maps etc... If you got the $ for it though, you can really outdo Alpine/Pioneer/Eclipse with making your own all-in-one PC... but again, it'll cost ya.
Carputer features can include GPS Nav, touch-screens, Satellite radio/TV, mp3 storage, video playback, bluetooth, mobile wifi access that stores access points across the country!, backup cameras, and even in-car diagnostics. As you can see, it can get pretty elaborate depending on how many USB ports you wanna fill up
